Universal Wastes are particular hazardous
waste streams that a company can choose to manage by recycling, versus
following the stringent requirements of the hazardous waste regulations.
Universal Wastes are generated by nearly all businesses, large to small,
and often are not properly managed. Under R299.9228 of Part 111 rules
and 40 CFR Universal Wastes are classified as:
| • Electric Lamps: Used fluorescent,
high intensity discharge, sodium vapor, mercury vapor, neon, compact,
shatter shields, spot lights, flood lights, and incandescent lamps
along with HID and fluorescent light fixtures. |

| • Batteries: Spent dry cell types that
include Alkaline, NiCad, Zinc Carbon, Button Cells, Mercury and Lithium
batteries etc. along With various wet cell types that include lead
acid automotive and lead acid steel case batteries. |

| • Mercury Containing Devices
: Includes thermostats, switches, thermometers, manometers, barometers,
and various other medical devices |
| • Computer / Electronic Equipment: Includes
CRT’s, CPU’s, printers, keyboards, telephone equipment,
circuit boards, CAD systems, TV’s, VCR’s, laptops, typewriters,
and other types of consumer electronics, business and electronic equipment.. |

Having her eye on changing technology and its
environmental impact, Kelle Grace Welch is the owner of 3 businesses.
She began in 1993 when she seized a niche opportunity and opened her
first business, Metro Recycling Systems, Inc.; which specializes in
Universal Waste Recycling programs for Corporate America. She later
expanded and began Metro Supply Express to concentrate on turn key remanufactured
laser toner cartridge programs. Then in 2003 she was approached by the
largest remanufacture of laser toner cartridges in the USA, to create
a strategic alliance. Thus began, Zeal Toner, LLC.
In 2001, Kelle was recognized as a leading Woman
Business Enterprise (WBE) representing the Michigan Women’s Business
Council in the 5th Anniversary of Women Business Enterprise National
Council’s Annual Salute to WBE’s in Washington, DC. She
has also received the 1999 Working Woman Magazine’s Entrepreneurial
Excellence Regional Award for “Innovative Approaches”. In
2004 she received the Outstanding Achievement Award from CEED. She has
served on the Michigan Women’s Business Council Certification
review Committee and has volunteered at many other CEED events.
In the last quarter of 2003, Kelle was diagnosed
with Ovarian Cancer and began immediate treatment, Which ended in May
of 2004. At the end of 2004; she began back to work by marketing her
3 companies into the e-commerce industry. Metro Zeal Recycling Systems,
Inc. has entered the e-commerce market by forming strategic alliance
with electrical/catalog companies. Metro Supply Express, featuring Zeal
Toner, LLC and other OEM Toner Products enter the e-commerce market
with a new on line ordering catalog program comparable to the largest
Office Products companies nationwide.
Kelle is recovered now from ovarian cancer, and
full of energy to raise her two teenage daughters and move her businesses
forward in 2005 and beyond.
